LAUREL — Heavy rains in Laurel flooded Route 1, shutting it down as the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee continue to move across the region. The usually busy road was turned into a pond. Traffic was closed in both directions. Onlookers said they’ve never seen anything like it.
“It’s never been this bad on route 1. We looked out and were absolutely amazed,” said Amanda Ingle, who works near the road.
The water was about two feet deep. A fire hydrant near the road was almost completely submerged.
Road workers said they’re not sure when they’ll be able to reopen the road. They have to wait for the rain to recede.
Down the road, College Park also got drenched. Forecasters say the rain is expected to last for at least another day, so area residents will have to stay prepared for more flooding.
