From Birth to Death in Sandtown-Winchester, Residents at Disadvantage
By Jake Bacher, Madeleine Deason, Joey Trull and Rose Creasman Welcome
In Freddie Gray's West Baltimore neighborhood of Sandtown-Winchester, residents have a life expectancy five years lower than the city average, and 11 years lower than the rest of the state. About 37 percent of pregnant women get adequate prenatal care -- about half the statewide figure -- which could explain the higher rates of infant mortality and the lower percentage of babies with satisfactory birth weight.
