MARYLAND DIVIDED
The 2016 presidential election brought issues of inequality to the fore unlike any in recent history. Maryland, like much of the country, remains divided — between rural and urban, haves and have-nots — and your prospects have a lot to do with how close you live to Baltimore or Washington, D.C. So while Hillary Clinton dominated Maryland with 60 percent of the vote, Donald Trump won 17 of Maryland’s 24 counties, most of them the poorest and least populated in the state. The following series of six articles examines rural Maryland with an eye towards the divide that defined the recent presidential election — and what is being done to overcome it.
