Better NFL teams seem to get more primetime games, according to NFL data. Yet Washington, who has only won a third of its games since 2008, has gotten on primetime TV at a rate more like what you'd expect from good teams. Why?

Strength of a fanbase factors into this. The fan equity index measures fan support using market size, team success, ticket price and median income, among other factors. The index shows the fanbases of all four NFC East teams have above-league-average loyalty — Dallas (No. 1), New York (3), Philadelphia (11) and Washington (15). Washington's rivals also each have more than 30 primetime appearances, which might inflate Washington's number because divisional rivalries draw more viewers.
