As batters swing for the fences, they tend to miss pitches more often. If a player scores higher on an advanced metric
known as "isolated power" (extra bases gained per at-bat), there's a good chance they also have a high strikeout rate, as
this graphic shows. Nationals second baseman Daniel Murphy, on the other hand, led the National League in slugging
percentage while also striking out less often than all but two hitters in the majors. Hover over individual points for details

Murphy was 2.32 times likelier to get extra bases in an at-bat than to strike out, the best ratio in the majors in 2016.
Playing with the New York Mets, he led the league last year as well. Albert Pujols, once one of the game's most feared
sluggers, led the league five years in a row and six times overall. Barry Bonds offered the most prolific combination of
power and contact of the millennium in 2004, proving to be 4.09 times more likely to get extra bases than to strike out.
