This graphic shows the average number of curses per movie in each five-year period. The popularity of most
curse words hasn't changed for these filmmakers. "Fuck" has become more popular in film scripts,
peaking in the 1990s. The 1980s saw some of the cleanest scripts. This could be attributed to the high number of
classic children, family, and fantasy movies released at that time. Spielberg movies like E.T. The Extra Terrestrial
and the Indiana Jones films were clean, popular movies at this point, and made up a good portion of the movies measured.
The 1990s saw the release of popular gangster flicks, like Goodfellas and Pulp Fiction, which used the
word "fuck" much more frequently.
Hovering over points shows the average use of each word per movie in the time measured.
