DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, Maryland, is renowned for its athletics. Its baseball coach, Sean O'Connor, is an advocate for using online stat-gathering services such as GameChanger, and by doing so, found a correlation between his team's quality at-bat differential in games and whether or not they win or lose.

The CNS graphic above shows the DeMatha baseball team's quality at-bat differential for each of its 28 games in the 2014 season. Of the 18 wins, 14 of them came when they had more quality at-bats than the opposing team.

A quality at-bat is defined as any time a batter does any of the following: Sees at least three pitches after two strikes, sees six or more pitches in an at-bat, hits a double, triple or homerun, hits a line drive or hard ground ball, gets walked, hits a sacrifice bunt or sacrifice fly ball.

Some baseball managers believe that this is a better metric of success than traditional statistics such as batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage.
