Junior Jordan Steffy opened the season as Maryland's starting quarterback, leading them to two wins and two losses. His season effectively ended when he suffered a concussion in a game against Rutgers the fifth week of the season.

Redshirt sophomore Danny O'Brien returned to College Park as the entrenched starter for the Terrapins. O'Brien started Maryland's first five games before being benched midway through the fifth game for ineffectiveness. In those five starts, O'Brien led the Terps to two wins and three losses.

Redshirt sophomore C.J. Brown replaced sophomore Danny O'Brien in the fifth game against Georgia Tech, and was named the starter for the following week's game against eighth-ranked Clemson just before kickoff. Brown nearly led the team to an upset of the Tigers, with the Terps blowing an 18-point halftime lead in the loss. Brown started the next two games as well, despite suffering a concussion against Florida State in his second start. All three of Brown's starts were losses.
Danny O'Brien
Maryland went back to sophomore Danny O'Brien for the next two games, both losses, although Brown featured in both games. O'Brien's season ended prematurely in the second game after he broke his arm against Notre Dame.
C.J. Brown
Maryland went back to sophomore C.J. Brown for the final two games of the season after Danny O'Brien's broken arm. After dropping the first game to Wake Forest, Brown had the Terps in a position to win their final game of the season in blowout fashion over North Carolina State, but the Wolfpack scored the game's final 42 points to upset Maryland.
Perry Hills
After redshirt junior C.J. Brown tore his ACL in the offseason, true freshman Perry Hills became Maryland's incumbent starter. Hills started Maryland's first seven games, leading them to four wins and two losses before he tore the ACL in his left knee just before halftime in his seventh start.

Sophomore Devin Burns, a former wide receiver, came in to relieve freshman Perry Hills and lasted two quarters before injuring his foot.

Sophomore Devin Burns's injury in Week 7 left true freshman Caleb Rowe as Maryland's only available scholarship quarterback. Rowe started Week 8 against Boston College, but suffered a season-ending ACL tear to his left knee late in that game.

After sophomore Caleb Rowe's injury, Maryland turned to true freshman linebacker Shawn Petty -- an option-style quarterback in high school -- to lead the offense against Georgia Tech. Petty threw two late touchdowns in a 20-point loss to the Yellow Jackets in his first career start and threw a touchdown in his second start, a 35-point loss to Clemson.
