It's safe to say that by now, most voters are aware that Mitt Romney is challenging Barack Obama for president of the United States. But what about Santa Claus?

Welcome to the Capital News Service's virtual meet-and-greet with Maryland's write-in candidates.

By Dana Amihere and Matt Fleming/Capital News Service

Ross C. "Rocky" Anderson
AGE: 61

PARTY:
Justice Party (Not recognized in Md.)

HEADQUARTERS:
Salt Lake City, Utah

VICE-PRESIDENT:
Luis J. Rodriguez

Officially, Anderson is of no party in Maryland, due to certain petition requirements. However, he is representing the Justice Party as both a write-in candidate and a ballot candidate, depending on the state. He practiced law for many years and served as mayor of Salt Lake City.

He is campaigning through social and news media. His platform is simple and straightforward. His No. 1 issue is to fight the "utter corruption of our government with the wealthy calling the shots." To show his sincerity, he said that he has put a strict $100 limit on campaign contributions, and rejected all corporate, PAC and Super PAC contributions. He said that priority No. 2 is fighting the ever-expanding power of the presidency.

Andre Barnett
AGE: 36

PARTY:
Reform

HEADQUARTERS:
Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

VICE-PRESIDENT:
Kenneth Cross

Click for website

Representing the Reform Party, Barnett is seeking to do just that--reform. Barnett, an Army veteran and owner of the IT company, Wisedome Inc., decided to run when he noticed his friend's, family's and community's standard of living decrease. He contemplated the philosophical purpose of what America was doing in Bosnia and other countries and decided enough was enough. Although he believes in foreign aid, Barnett does not believe in being the "UN's guard dog." He wants to focus on any domestic terrorist insurgency, and strengthen the economy, fix health care, promote job growth and education. To get there, he would encourage politicians to stop focusing on the differences between parties and candidates and start working together.

Michael David Boyles
AGE: 46

PARTY:
Unaffiliated

HEADQUARTERS:
Preston, Md.

VICE-PRESIDENT:

A difficult man to get ahold of, Boyles makes himself available via email. He would reform campaign finance and is not accepting any contributions, and he would amend congressional salaries to be performance-based. He is a poet, writer, former first responder and servant of God. Here is his poem called "America":

"All for the love of a country called America. Now that freedom has found me, i know were i belong. The love of a country, the love of freedom. Puts the joy in our hearts in a country that we love, America. All for the love of a country called America."

Democratic

HEADQUARTERS:
Laurel, Md.

VICE-PRESIDENT:
James Ogle

Briscoe is a teacher in Anne Arundel public schools and an entrepreneur. She owns a Christian dance school called the Anointed Warriors of Praise. She has provided jobs for homeless people handing out flyers and teaching dance, as well as encouraged GED programs. She had been the "Boston Tea Party" candidate for president, but the two sides parted ways after a miscommunication. They were under the impression that she was a professor at Howard Community College, and she was under the impression that they knew she was just a student. She wants to "organize the budget," and increase funding for military, education, food and health care. She said that she is the youngest African-American woman to be chosen as a write-in.

Born Thomas Patrick O'Connor, the longtime child-rights activist said he hopes his campaign will inspire either President Obama or Mitt Romney to talk about child issues, and he has promised to throw his support behind the candidate that does. He has only a limited background in politics - he unsuccessfully ran for fire board once. Over the years, Claus had high-level administrative positions at the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the New York Police Department. His platform centers on children's issues. He has collected slightly more than $100, which will be used solely for press releases. So why did he change his name in 2005? Because when dealing with legislators, "no one wants to say 'no' to Santa Claus."

Richard Duncan
AGE: 69

PARTY:
Unaffiliated

HEADQUARTERS:
Aurora, Ohio

VICE-PRESIDENT:
Ricky Johnson

No website available

Real estate agent, entrepreneur, musician: Duncan runs the Patio Tavern in Middlefield, Ohio, where he is known to get on stage and tickle the ivories and strum the guitar strings. He doesn't have a big background in politics, but he ran for president in 2008, ultimately losing to Barack Obama. He is self funded, which limits his campaigning activities to Ohio. Duncan wants to "restore pride in our country." His top priority is security, saying "we have to keep the terrorists away," and thwart any global nuclear threat. Immigration reform is equally important; under no circumstance does he support illegal immigration.

Dwight Kenneth French
AGE: 64

PARTY:
Unaffiliated

HEADQUARTERS:
Silver Spring, Md.

VICE-PRESIDENT:
None

Click for website

French just retired from 36 years of civil service at the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Justice. Convinced that neither major party is serving the American people, French felt that he had certain personal and professional attributes that would serve the country well. To him, the deficit and debt are the core problems of the country. He wants to cut superfluous defense spending, Medicare Part D and foreign military bases, as well as reform taxes.

Virgil Goode
AGE: 65

PARTY:
Constitution

HEADQUARTERS:
Rocky Mount, Va.

VICE-PRESIDENT:
James Clymer

Click for website

By far the most politically experienced of all the Maryland write-in candidates, Goode was a Virginia congressman for 12 years, and state senator for 25 years. He's jumped parties a few times. He's fought legal battles all over the country regarding his ballot eligibility, and has settled for being a write-in candidate in several states. He would like to balance the federal budget, fight for term limits for congressional members because of the "constant campaigning," and would only serve one term as president. He wants to eliminate PAC contributions and issue a moratorium on hiring foreign workers with green cards until the national unemployment rate falls below 5 percent.

Darrell Hykes
AGE: 41

PARTY:
Unaffiliated

HEADQUARTERS:
Atlanta

VICE-PRESIDENT:
None at this time

Click for website

Hykes has no background in politics, but has been in the transportation business most of his career. He also served in the Air Force. He likes being an unaffiliated candidate, because he is "free to do it (his) way." Hykes would meet with every governor, balance the federal budget by cutting taxes and spending, create jobs by lowering taxes on businesses and increase teacher's salaries. He also wants to bring religion and the Bible back to schools, because "this was a Christian nation." He is not against including other religions, but wants to give people the right to choose.

Nelson Keyton
AGE: 54

PARTY:
Unaffiliated

HEADQUARTERS:
Roanoke, Va.

VICE-PRESIDENT:
Jason Jennelle

Click for website

Called to action by the current state of the country, Keyton figured "why not run?" He has a simple, three-point plan: First, he would stop foreclosures and reimburse the banks for any funds lost, he would get rid of property taxes because "you can't really own land if you pay property taxes," and he would help people in any way possible.

Matt Lydick
AGE: Unknown

PARTY:
Republican

HEADQUARTERS:
Ellicott City, Md.

VICE-PRESIDENT:
Unknown

Not a lot is known about this native-son candidate. He did not respond to several phone calls and emails, but he is an inside salesman at Coca-Cola. According to his Facebook page, his mission is, "To free the vast majority of the moderate center from the tyranny of the fringe left and right." His quest for liberation is based on creating jobs, energy independence and a revised national defense policy that eliminates "misguided cowboy diplomacy and war-mongering for the benefit of government contractors and radical political scare tactics."

Dennis Knill
AGE: 58

PARTY:
Democratic

HEADQUARTERS:
Sedona, Ariz.

VICE-PRESIDENT:
Dave Gilder

Click for website

A jack-of-all-trades, Knill has sold everything from mortgages to insurance to investments, and worked in law enforcement, restaurants and even construction. According to his website, he carries his birth certificate with him, "just in case you want to see it." He would focus on fiscal responsibility, jobs, domestic oil drilling, battling inflation, bringing troops home, and ending all foreign aid. He would also institute a 7-7-7 plan, which would impose a flat 7 percent income, usage and corporate tax - 2 points better than Herman Cain's plan.

Merlin Miller
AGE: 60

PARTY:
American Third Position Party

HEADQUARTERS:
Gatlinburg, Tenn.

VICE-PRESIDENT:
Harry Bertram

Click for website

An Army veteran, Miller found a home in the motion picture industry, after getting a master's degree in cinema and television from the University of Southern California. He did not get politically active until he started working on Ron Paul's presidential campaign in 2007, and now he finds himself "in the middle of an American nationalist movement." Although American Third Position Party is not well funded, he said that donations are starting to roll in. His VP candidate, Harry Bertram, has a political history which blossomed when he helped former Alabama Gov. George Wallace run for president.

Dean Morstad
AGE: 37

PARTY:
Unaffiliated

HEADQUARTERS:
Saint Paul, Minn.

VICE-PRESIDENT:
Josh Franke-Hyland

Click for website

Excluding student council, Morstad has never served a public office. He currently works in IT, as a project manager for software development. He says that the impetus for his candidacy was the Occupy movement. He doesn't so much agree with its politics, but respects its ability to mobilize for a cause. So what does Morstad believe in? A limited federal government and restricted spending. A big advocate of the 10th Amendment, Morstad thinks that same-sex marriage is for the states to decide, as is any kind of energy policy. He also supports bringing troops back home and cutting foreign aid. He is against nuclear power.

Deonia "Dee" Neveu

HEADQUARTERS:
Richmond, Va.

VICE-PRESIDENT:
None

Speaking to the world through a webcam on her campaign's website, Neveu expressed deep dissatisfaction with the Democratic Party and its exclusive support for President Obama as the Democratic presidential candidate. She said that Obama should be a one-term president, and that his "season and reason is up." She is also against "Obamacare," and wants to fix the budget. "There's a whole lot of spending, but not a lot of revenue," said Neveu. She has been married four times and is a mother of five. She has lived in Richmond since 2002.

Barbara Prokopich
AGE: 68

PARTY:
Republican

HEADQUARTERS:
Mead, Wash.

VICE-PRESIDENT:
Sen. Scott Brown, R-Mass.

Prokopich has lived in Washington for the last 20 years. The former Marine is the mother of two boys. Fiscal responsibility is a big issue with Prokopich, as is removing the U.S. from the United Nations. She chose Scott Brown as her running mate, because "he's an excellent human being," although she has not been able to reach Brown personally yet and has had to extend the honor through his aides.

Leon "Leo" Ray
AGE: 42

PARTY:
Unaffiliated

HEADQUARTERS:
Albuquerque, N.M.

VICE-PRESIDENT:
None

Ray has had many jobs, mostly in retail and sales. He is a processor at Goodwill. He does not have a VP candidate selected, but noted that Lyndon B. Johnson did not have one for a few years. As a representative of the working poor, Ray's main issues center on improving their conditions. He would raise the minimum wage and offer one week of vacation for every six months of work.

Cecil James Roth
AGE: 67

PARTY:
Unaffiliated

HEADQUARTERS:
Geneseo, Ill.

VICE-PRESIDENT:
None noted

Click for website

Roth has been a teacher for 27 years. He, too, has no background in politics, but he has been an activist in the legal system, always defending himself. One time, Roth said, he was arrested in church because he refused to leave when asked by the pastor, for reasons undisclosed. He argued what he believed was a logical and legal defense, but the jury felt differently. His top campaign priority is reducing the debt; the second is limiting congressional terms. He has not accepted any campaign money. He said he believes that a person can win an election without spending a cent -- although he admits to spending a small amount on some shirts.
