Maryland Has Less Income Inequality Than Almost 70 Percent of States

Maryland has a relatively low level of income inequality compared with other U.S. states, according to the GINI Index, a metric that measures income inequality. A GINI Index score of 0 represents perfect income equality, and a score of 100 represents a perfectly unequal distribution of income. Washington, D.C., has the highest level of inequality, followed by New York. Inequality tends to be higher in the South and Northeast. Alaska has the lowest level of income inequality in the U.S.
