Baltimore city has the highest level of income inequality in Maryland, followed closely by Talbot and Worcester counties on the Eastern Shore. Calvert County has the most evenly distributed income of any county in the state, according to the GINI Index, a metric that measures inequality. In Maryland, rural areas tend to have higher levels of income inequality than counties surrounding a metropolitan area. A GINI Index score of 0 represents perfect income equality, and a score of 100 represents a perfectly unequal distribution of income.

Washington, D.C., has the highest level of inequality, followed by New York. Inequality tends to be higher in the South and Northeast. Alaska has the lowest level of income inequality in the U.S.
