Zika Virus Closing in on Maryland

As of Feb. 3, 35 people had contracted the Zika virus in another country and brought it to the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (The Texas Department of State Health Services also reported the first transmitted case of Zika virus in the United States on Feb. 2). Since Feb. 3, media outlets have reported two additional "travel-associated" cases in Texas and one case in both Indiana and Ohio. The White House said Monday that, according to the CDC, a total of 50 Zika cases had been reported in the U.S. as of Feb. 5. Updated state-by-state totals through Feb. 5 were not available from the CDC.

Zika Virus Transmission Mostly Isolated in Americas

The Zika virus is spreading much more quickly in some countries than others. In Brazil, there have been about 1.5 million documented cases of transmission within the country, according to Reuters. In the U.S., there has been one, announced on Feb. 2 in Texas, according to the Texas health department.
