Star Spangled McHenry: Baltimore Celebrates the 200th Anniversary of the National Anthem

Two-hundred years to the weekend that the British bombarded Fort McHenry, visitors from all over flocked to the historic site to take part in the celebration. Volunteers re-created the scene in period costumes while the Navy Blue Angels roared overhead.

It’s been 200 years since “The Star-Spangled Banner” was written, and from singing it in classrooms to belting it out at sporting events, it’s a part of this country’s fabric. In the honor of the bicentennial, the Smithsonian launched the kickoff of its anniversary celebration.
