California Marijuana Statistics
Since 2018, California has allocated nearly all of its yearly tax revenue from the commercial sale of marijuana to programs specifically targeted to combat the potential negative effects of the drug. This includes youth programs regarding substance abuse prevention and treatment, environmental restoration to clean up and prevent damage from illegal marijuana growing, and other public health initiatives related to marijuana.
In essence, California's Proposition 64 aims to use the revenue it receives from legal cannabis sales to build a public safety net in light of legalization and rectify wrongs incurred in the state as a result of marijuana prohibition.
Despite this, some California leaders are making a move to lower taxes on marijuana, therefore reducing the revenue that might be offered to these existing social programs, NBC News reported. Activists say this trend would disproportionately affect low-income children, mainly children who are non-white, by cutting the resources Proposition 64 funds.
