BELTSVILLE–The opening of two new facilities at the ATK Spacecraft Systems and Services plant in Beltsville will mean lots of new jobs for Prince George’s County.
“We’ve hired 35 people. We’ve got 62 openings across manufacturing and engineering, and we’re going to look for another 150 people in the next twelve months on top of that,” said ATK Vice President Tom Wilson.
The new employees will work in manufacturing and engineering in order to meet the demand for an increase in robotics, and thermal control in space, Wilson said.
“The work we’re doing today, we have contracts to do all this work, so we actually need to staff up in order to be able to execute all this work,” he said.
The new jobs come at a good time. While Maryland has not been hit as hard as many other states, officials say some 2500 jobs were lost in the state during the month of August. That put Maryland’s unemployment rate at 7.3 percent.
