Johnston is a graduate student at the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland, where she also served as an editorial assistant for the American Journalism Review. The Indiana native studied journalism and political science at Indiana University, and has interned at the Tampa Bay Times, The Dallas Morning News and the Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette.
