COLLEGE PARK, Maryland – Maryland’s eight congressional districts are broken into strange, wonky shapes that sprawl across the state.
Why? Their shapes are designed to steer Democrats to victory on Election Day. This process of altering congressional districts in favor of one party is called called gerrymandering, and it’s part of the reason Maryland will probably return seven Democrats and only one Republican to Congress.

Like staring up at the clouds on a Summer day, you start to see things in the shape of each district if you look hard enough. Here’s what we think each district looks like:
District 1 – a bass clarinet
