COLLEGE PARK, Maryland –Taraji P. Henson was born on September 11, 1970 in Washington, D.C. She graduated from Oxon Hill High School in Oxon Hill, Maryland and later attended Howard University to study acting.
Henson is well-known for her role on Empire as Cookie Lyon, which made her the first African-American to win a Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series. This year, Henson is nominated for an Oscar award for her role in “Hidden Figures,” where she portrays African-American NASA mathematician, Katherine Johnson. The film has already won a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.
