COLLEGE PARK, Maryland — Katie Ledecky was born in 1997 and was raised in Bethesda, Maryland. She made her Olympic swimming debut in the 2012 London Olympic games at the age of 15. In 2012, she unexpectedly won her first gold medal in the 800-meter freestyle.
In 2016, she sped past the competition to win four Olympic gold medals and one silver. She is the only woman, besides Debbie Meyer, to win the 200-meter, 400-meter and 800-meter events in one Olympic game.
Ledecky currently goes to Stanford University where she continues to break NCAA records as part of the women’s swimming team.
March is Women’s History Month. Meet Billie Holiday, another historic and influential Maryland woman.
