In his first 100 days in office, President Donald Trump…
- Signed 124 executive orders
- Picked 279 nominees to fill roles in his administration
- Cut more than 121,000 federal jobs across almost 30 agencies
- Spent at least $710 billion — about $80 billion more than a year ago
- Saved $160 billion in government spending, according to DOGE, though according to a news report it could also end up costing taxpayers 135 billion
- Announced reciprocal tariffs on about 90 countries
Here’s five charts to understand Trump’s second term:
1. Executive orders
Trump signed a slew of executive orders in an initial 100-day-blitz, easily surpassing former presidents’ records. Most of these executive orders dealt with reshaping the federal government and foreign policy.
2. Immigration
Cracking down on illegal immigration was a leading topic in the Trump campaign, where he set his attention on the millions of undocumented immigrants that live in the United States. He followed through on this during his first 100 days, where the U.S Immigration Customs and Enforcement agency has taken unprecedented steps into workplaces and schools. The chart below is from October 2024-February 2025.
3. Federal layoffs
The federal government employs about 10% of Maryland’s workforce. The Trump administration’s job cuts have hit parts of the state particularly hard, affecting federal contractors in Baltimore, Montgomery County and Prince George’s County.
4. Department of Government Efficiency
The Elon Musk led agency focused its efforts on the General Services Administration, cutting thousands of leases across the country. However, many of those leases were already set to expire or had entered its soft lease termination period.
5. Lawsuits
Trump’s breakneck pace of executive orders yielded hundreds of lawsuits across various areas that slowed down some of his agenda.
