Technology used by Julie Stamper of the Office of Geographical Information Systems has advanced significantly in the past two decades. Custom maps can be created to depict a wide range of population data and details, including comparing demographics in the county and sections of the county districts. As can be seen in these maps, changing a single variable when creating comparative maps can alter the optics of population demographics. Comparing the black population to the white population creates lighter gray sections that when the black population is compared to the total population or when presented as a percentage of the total population. These changes are important as people looking to influence redistricting decisions can choose specific variables that would advocate their interests in the discussion.
