After receiving his degree at the The University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law, Harry A. Cole was hired as the first black assistant state attorney general in Maryland in 1953. In 1954, Cole was elected the first African-American Maryland State Senator and in 1977, he became the first African-American Maryland Court of Appeals judge.
