COLLEGE PARK, Maryland — In the United States, Thanksgiving is followed by heavy shopping days like Black Friday and Cyber Monday. And for the past seven years, Giving Tuesday has been celebrated the Tuesday after that.
According to the givingtuesday.org website the observance was first celebrated in 2012 and was created to kick off the season of giving.
Over the past seven years, citizens worldwide have participated in the event, where organizations, foundations, companies, brands, politicians, and celebrities encourage people to donate their time and money to causes important to them via social media with the hashtag #GivingTuesday.
The #GivingTuesday hashtag is flooding social media feeds today and several Maryland organizations are using the campaign to draw attention to their causes.
