Alec Ross, 46, grew up in Charleston, West Virginia, where he went to George Washington High School. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Northwestern University.

Ross, a former Obama administration technology adviser and middle school teacher, is an author. His book, “The Industries of the Future,” was published in 2016 and spent time on the New York Times’ bestseller list. After serving as a technology policy adviser to Barack Obama, he was a tech czar for the U.S. State Department. There, he was also a senior adviser to then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Before joining the Obama campaign in 2008, he co-founded the nonprofit startup One Economy, which worked to deliver high-speed Internet access, educational content and education to low-income communities. Earlier in his career, upon graduating college, Ross joined Teach for America. He taught at a Baltimore middle school.

Ross and his wife, Felicity, a teacher in Baltimore City Public Schools, live in Baltimore. They have three children, ages 15, 13 and 11.
